REVIEW: The Disney Family Singalong

Today, Disney+ released The Disney Family Singalong.

With the Coronavirus outbreak and people having to social distance themselves from each other, television has had to come up with creative ways to continue doing their shows. So, Disney produced a singalong where all the participating celebrities did so from the comfort of their own homes. It was almost like a giant Skype call with varying connections and resolutions rather than a slick polished piece. And, because of that, it felt like we were all curled up on the couch singing along.

The 52 minute special featured the likes of Ariana Grande, Donny Osmond, Christina Aguilera, Michael Buble, Demi Lovato, Beyoncé, Tori Kelly, Darren Criss among others. And they sang songs from The Lion King, Moana, Mulan, The Jungle Book, Pocahontas and more!

There were three really standout moments for me during The Disney Family Sigalong.

First, I got goosebumps when Ariana Grande sang "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)," Megara's song from Hercules. I always thought that she was a great singer, but I loved the effort she put into this arrangement. She even harmonized with herself as the Muses.

Second, we were treated to Luke Evans and Josh Gad singing "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast while being accompanied by the legendary Alan Menken. There was just something awe inspiring about it and their performance was fantastic.

But, the piece de resistance was the showstopper finale of "We're All In This Together" from High School Musical. It was fantastic that they got all the casts both old and new with some other performers from director Kenny Ortega's movies. The song has really become an anthem for our time. I know I always hum the song whenever people say that phrase these days.

One of the things I realized is that it's hard singing a lot of the Disney songs. I was huffing and puffing by the end of "How Far I'll Go" from Moana. But, who cares. It's all in great fun and The Disney Family Singalong was a lot of fun.

So, when you get a chance, kick your shoes off, settle in and sing!
