Thoughts on Season FIVE of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars"

And, now I move to Season FIVE of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Interestingly enough, unlike the other seasons aside from Season ONE, this season has no title. This was the first season I watched and what got me hooked.  So, it's interesting to watch it again now that I've been able to watch everything in order (misplaced prequel episodes aside). Please note that I'm kind of live blogging while watching and there are some SPOILERS involved.  If you haven't watched this season yet, please wait until you have.

Here are my thoughts:

  • Um...total dis of your brother who just rescued you from being a crazy robot spider hybrid! Darth Maul will be Savage Opress' Master in "Revival."
  • They're getting themselves in the pirate business.  But, uh oh, Hondo...better watch out.
  • Again, I love when Obi-Wan teams up with the more seedier inhabitants of the galaxy. I like his and Hondo's relationship of mutual respect.
  • Poor Adi Gallia...
  • Poor armless Savage Opress...
  • Maul, "You will pay for your insolence!" Hondo, "Ha!  We are pirates!  We don't even know what that means!"  BEST DIALOGUE EVER! #ILoveHondo
  • Puppet mastering again, Palpatine?
  • I love seeing Ahsoka with Lux again in "A War On Two Front." Lux credits Ahsoka for being there as he rescued him from Death Watch. He is inspired by her.
  • A love triangle - Ahsoka, Lux and Steela Gerrera!
  • The Onderon Rebels are impressive and working together well.  Ahsoka, who's left in charge in "Front Runners," is a proud mama.
  • Awww...I want Ahsoka and Lux together. :(\
  • I'm sad about Ahsoka and Lux, but I kind of get the building relationship between Lux and Steela in "The Soft War."
  • I really want Anakin to stop telling Ahsoka that purpose comes before personal feelings.
  • Damn...Steela is on the "purpose comes before feelings" train!  She decides they have to rescue their former leader instead of rescuing her brother Saw.
  • General Tandin saves the day!
  • Ahsoka, though, is NOT on the "purpose comes before feelings" train and gets involved.  The Jedi are now involved in this civil war.
  • I'm still holding up hopes for Ahsoka and Lux to be together at the start of "Tipping Points."
  • Dang...it looks like Ahsoka is approving this Lux/Steela relationship after Steela kisses Lux. I'm only going to hope that it's somehow proven that Ahsoka and Lux are brother and sister so I can give up the dream.
  • I don't really get why the Jedi seemed to have gotten involved in so many other wars on other planets.  Why are they bowing out of Onderon?
  • Hondo is back! #ILoveHondo
  • NOOOOO!  Not Steela!  I was just starting to get used to the idea of Steela and Lux together!! But, Lux has been appointed Senator of Onderon!
  • The Onderon Rebellion storyline was FANTASTIC! It was just very well written and, again, I enjoyed seeing Ahsoka come into her own more.
  • The Younglings are so adorable in "The Gathering."
  • "The Gathering" was a nice simple episode and a nice, slower pace after having just lived through a 5 episode rebellion.
  • Oh, another episode with the Younglings in "A Test Of Strength."
  • If the Jedi have a lightsaber designer and engineer, why do the Younglings need to learn to make them?
  • What?!?!  Hondo, what you are doing?  I like your tenuous relationship with the Jedi.  Why betray it now?
  • They sure are talking very loudly in the ventilation shaft as they hide from the pirates...
  • I'm sorry...I get that he's a pirate, but this is a little out of Hondo's character to order the killing of Younglings.  I mean, he doesn't want to get involved in Jedi affairs, but he's going to kill Younglings if they stop him from getting the crystals?
  • Ahsoka is captured, but she, again, has showed herself to be a great Jedi by making sure her charges were safe.
  • In "Bound For Rescue,"the Aleena are back!!!!  I love them!
  • The Younglings have now joined the circus so they can get to Hondo's base and rescue Ahsoka.  Oh, how resourceful they are.
  • Yay! Ahsoka rescued!
  • Oh, how quickly the tides have turned in "A Necessary Bond."  Hondo and the Jedi together again to battle General Grievous and his forces.
  • Ahsoka vs. General Grievous - FIGHT! Ahsoka puts up a good fight, but does the right thing and escapes with the Younglings.
  • Okay, I know Hondo and Obi-Wan are "friends," but it is odd that Obi-Wan decided to take Hondo at his word that he engaged in a "rescue" to save the Younglings.  I mean, he did tell his men to kill anybody in his way when they first took control of their ship.
  • Yay! The Younglings are now Jedi!
  • While I thought the Youngling episodes were cute, I'm not sure if they were my favorites, especially this late in the series.  I didn't dislike them, but there's been so much going on in regards to the Clone War, the return of Darth Maul and the growing relationship between Anakin and Palpatine that taking the series out for a 4 episode Youngling episode seemed a little unnecessary.  I think I would have enjoyed these episodes more earlier in the series.
  • Team Droid starting in "Secret Weapon."
  • In all honesty, I didn't have a lot to say about the Team Droid episodes - "Secret Weapons," "A Sunny Day In The Void," "Missing Action," "Point Of No Return."  They're probably my least favorite of the series so far.  Believe me, I LOVE R2-D2.  I love Astromech Droids.  But, four episodes of wacky droid antics led by a guy who reminds me of the Muppet Pepe the Prawn was just too much for me.  I couldn't stand Colonel Gascon, probably my least favorite characters to date.  He was just so irritating.  In fact, I probably would have liked these episodes a bit more if he weren't in it.  And these episodes just followed up 4 episodes being used up by the Younglings.  I'm trying to figure out why they felt it necessary to take up all these episodes on both these storylines, especially given the fact that this was a slightly abbreviated season with 20 episodes rather than 22.
  • And, now we start "Eminence" and are back to Darth Maul and Savage Opress! This is also the first episode I watched, so it'll be interesting seeing how I view the rest of the episodes now that I have the context of all the other episodes.
  • Alliance between Maul and Savage and Death Watch!
  • Building an army...Black Sun and the Pyke Syndicate.  Not a bad group if you're a bunch of evil badasses! :)
  • Now, to get the Hutts to join...Bounty Hunters vs. Maul, Savage and the Death Watch - FIGHT!  Maul, Savage and Death Watch WIN! The Hutts have been "persuaded" to join the army, too.
  • Off to Mandalore in "Shades of Reason!" People are not happy with Duchess Satine and people are starting to show their faith in Death Watch.
  • Death Watch turns on Maul and Opress.  Maul and Opress turn on Death Watch.  Maul negotiates with Almec, that snake, to be their puppet prime minister as they take over Mandalore.
  • Darth Maul vs. Pre Vizlca - FIGHT! Maul wins and is now leader of Death Watch and Mandalore.  Bo-Katan Kryze and her supporters, however, call foul!
  • Korkie is back in "The Lawless" and Bo-Katan has now decided to join forces with her sister Satine!
  • I kind of wish that Satine, in her message, said, "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi.  You're my only hope."
  • Just curious...why does he always give the advice that purpose outweighs emotion, yet, he emotionally jumps into the fray before waiting for a vote from the Senate to approve his rescue mission to Mandalore?
  • I kind of like Satine's Black Canary look.
  • Maul tries to turn Obi-Wan.  But, since he doesn't turn...Aww...poor, Satine.  Actually, I don't mean to make light of it.  This was the episode that hooked me (sadly, way too late, though).  It's very emotional and I truly feel for both Satine and Obi-Wan.  The score, actually, as she says her final words is also quite beautiful.
  • Bo-Katan rescues Obi-Wan as Palpatine...or, should I say Darth Sidious...makes his way to Mandalore.  Sidious is PISSED!
  • Sidious vs. Maul and Savage - FIGHT! Sidious WINS!
  • "The reality of the Sith is there can only be two.  You are no longer my apprentice and you have been replaced!"
  • But, this can't make sense?  If Dooku is Sidious' apprentice and Ventress was Dooku's apprentice, then wouldn't that make at least 3 Sith at one time?
  • And, now we get to "Sabotage."  This story line makes me sad.  I'm glad, though, that we get to see Anakin and Ahsoka being a bit playful at the beginning of this episode.  But, it's sad that this may be the last time we get to see them having this kind of relationship...
  • A Jedi might have bombed the Jedi Temple. Gone to the Dark Side, they have.  Anakin and Ahsoka have been assigned to investigate...because they are impartial?  I don't get why they'd be impartial since they are also Jedi as well.
  • "Not every Jedi agrees with the war, Ahsoka.  There are many political idealist among us."
  • A Temple Worker is the suspect, but everybody still fears it's a Jedi. And, if it wasn't him, it looks like they took great lengths to make it look like him. Curiouser and curiouser...
  • His wife set him up and fed him nanobots that made her husband explode!  COLD!
  • While they solved the case, Mace tells them that people are starting to distrust the Jedi because the war is becoming more and more unpopular.
  • In "The Jedi Who Knew To Much," Ahsoka is consoling Barriss Offee. Oooh!
  • Ahsoka is pissed that the Republic is taking the bomber's wife, saying she should stay in Jedi custody.
  • "Nothing will ever change..."  Foreshadowing.
  • Tarkin is still an A-hole!
  • "Ahsoka, have you ever wondered if it was right to go on our missions?" Barriss likes Ahsoka's ability to see things clearly.  Hmmm...I wonder if this conversation was the one where Barriss decides to pin the crime on Ahsoka.
  • The prisoner wants to speak to Ahsoka...and Ahsoka alone.  The prisoner tries to tell Ahsoka the truth but...NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! The set up begins!!!! The prisoner is force choked and it now looks like Ahsoka did it.
  • "If there was someone else running about, why did you not sense them?"
  • Anakin wants to visit, but he is not allowed and he is getting pissed.
  • Ahsoka thinks he left her a key card, but, when she escapes, several Clone Troopers are knocked out.  This is not looking good for Ahsoka.
  • Anakin tries to get her to stop and tells her that he believes her.  She believes she's being set up and that nobody else will believe her.  Ahsoka is not a wanted Togruta and considered armed and dangerous!
  • That look she gives Anakin at the end of "The Jedi Who Knew To Much" is heartbreaking...
  • In "To Catch A Jedi," Tarkin continues to be an ASS as the Jedi discuss Ahsoka.  Anakin and Plo Koon still believe in Ahsoka.  But, again, if the Jedi can sense things, why can't they sense Ahsoka's innocence? Barriss can't possibly be that strong to fool Jedi as old as Yoda, can she?  I've always wondered this...
  • I am happy, though, that Plo Koon believes her.  He's one of my favorite Jedi.
  • Asajj Ventress is going to collect the bounty the Galactic Senate has put on her head! But, Ahsoka asks her to help her, appealing to their similarities.
  • Another heartbreaking look when Anakin sees Ahsoka with Ventress.
  • It's also heartbreaking that Ahsoka still sees Barriss as an ally...
  • Every time I see Ventress fight, I can see why Sidious saw her as a threat. She's awesome.
  • "These are strange times..."
  • Ahsoka thinks Ventress is setting her up because somebody is disguised as her. Who knew Barriss Offee could be such a mastermind!
  • Ahsoka captured and set up in a warehouse full of nano-droids.  Anakin can't believe it.
  • Sigh..."The Wrong Jedi." This episode makes me sad.
  • The Republic want the Jedi to expel Ahsoka from the Order so the Republic can try her. The Jedi are still at odds as to what to do.
  • Can the Jedi not sense that she is telling the truth? Yoda says that everything is clouded by the Dark Side.  Stupid Dark Side!
  • Ahsoka is expelled and Anakin is pissed.  I am pissed, too.
  • Padme will represent her during her trial. Anakin is going to find Ventress.
  • Anakin Skywalker vs. Asajj Ventress - FIGHT!!!! Anakin is going really dark.  But, Ventress tells him that she helped Ahsoka because they were both abandoned.  She tells him she was abandoned by..."you and your precious Jedi Order." Anakin seems to think she might be right.
  • Asajj tells Anakin that Ahsoka did talk to Barriss and it was Barriss who told them to go to the warehouse. Anakin is pissed again.
  • Padme tries to defend her the best that she can and Tarkin tries to be the best ASS he can be. Does Grand Moff mean Giant Butthole?  Because, if it does, he deserves the title.
  • Anakin goes to question Barriss. He calls her bluff and puts her in a position where she has to reveal she has Ventress' lightsabers.  Good for you, Anakin!!!
  • "The only thing the Jedi Council believes in is VIOLENCE!"
  • Anakin Skywalker vs. Barriss Offee - FIGHT! Anakin WINS!
  • Ahsoka is shocked that Barriss betrayed her.
  • "I did it because I've come to realize what many people in the Republic have come to realize...that the Jedi are the ones responsible for this war.  That we've so lost our way that we've become villains in this conflict.  That we are the ones should be the ones put on trial...ALL OF US!  And my attack on the temple was an attack on what the Jedi have become...an army fighting for the Dark Side...fallen from the Light that we once held so dearly.  This Republic is FAILING! It's only a matter of time."
  • Anakin apologizes and the Council apologizes.  They say this was her great trial and invite her back.
  • Another heartbreaking moment between Ahsoka and Anakin.  Ahsoka is, understandably, not coming back. I am actually crying.  Tears are welling up in my eyes because I've come to really love Ahsoka who was more true to the Jedi ideals than anything else.
  • Anakin tells her that he understands, more than anybody else, wanting to walk away from the order.
  • I'm still crying.  And, I'm afraid what I might find in the final season for Ahsoka...
