The Lovers, The Dreamers And Me...My Favorite Song: Rainbow Connection

This morning, as I put together the Castles, Capes & Clones News Round-Up for this week, I placed at the end a YouTube video of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, John Legend and Queen Latifah singing "Rainbow Connection."

It made me think about how this is my favorite song.  Not just my favorite Muppets song...but my favorite song of all time.  So, as Muppets Most Wanted opened this weekend, I thought Id' talk about this song.

The song was originally written for The Muppet Movie in 1979 by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, at first performed by Kermit The Frog alone when he's in the middle of the swamp.  Right away, we know Kermit is no ordinary swamp frog, but a frog with a dream wishing to make that "rainbow connection."

We hear the song reprised at the end of The Muppet Movie with all the Muppets as a rainbow shines upon them, signifying that the "rainbow connection" has been made.

The reason I love this song so much is also the reason why my favorite Disney songs tend to be about dreams. There's something magical about dreams and I love to believe that there is magic in this world.  And, there's something just so beautiful in the lyrics.  The song isn't just about the dream, but about being encouraged to dream and that your dreams are attainable.

Whenever I get down or want to be inspired, I listen to this song to remind me to always try to follow my dreams.  It tells me magic is alive.  It isn't just a song to me, but a friend.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard and answered
when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that
and someone believed it,
and look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing?
And what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell,
we know that it's probably magic....

Have you been half asleep
and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors?
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
the lovers, the dreamers and me.
La, la la, La, la la la, La Laa, la la, La, La la laaaaaaa

  1. Definitely in my top five movie songs of all time. Moon River from 'Breakfast at Tiffanys' is also great.

    1. Yes, "Moon River" is a fantastic song and probably in my top 5 movie songs as well!
