Thoughts On The First Guardians Of The Galaxy Trailer

Tonight, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the first trailer of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was released!  While I'm on the West Coast, thanks to the magic of the Internet, I was able to watch it shortly it aired on the East Coast.  I've been so excited all day long about it that I thought I might be setting up my expectations, but the trailer, thankfully, did not disappoint!

I was fortunate enough to attend the Walt Disney Studios presentation at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California last year where they actually showed us some footage from the film.  And, I remember my cousin turning to me and saying, "if they promote the film like this, it's going to be big with mainstream audiences." Amazingly, about 75% of the footage in today's trailer is what we saw that day (The orb scene and all the parts with the line-up and John C. Rielly processing them).  I wholeheartedly agree with my cousin that this is going to play well with general audiences.  And, if the discussion on twitter is any indication, I think most people agree that there is something good and different about this trailer.

Marvel managed to perfectly balance the comedic charm that everybody loves Chris Pratt for with the fanboy action that hardcore fans want to see.  When I watched the trailer, I felt like I was reading a Guardians of the Galaxy comic book.  Of course there are changes in some of the looks to work for film, BUT, I feel they captured the spirit of the book in the way Marvel Studios has been able to do with its core characters.

I think the next step is to get people on board with Rocket Raccoon and Groot.  I'm hoping in the next trailer we'll be able to see the two interact and that general audiences will get to love them as much as I do.  I'm hoping that when Guardians of the Galaxy is finally released that "I AM GROOT" will be on everybody's lips as "Let It Go" and "Everything Is Awesome" is on everybody's lips now.

I absolutely cannot wait to see more!  If you haven't seen the trailer yet, here it is:

And, just in case you missed the 15 second teaser earlier today, here's that, too:
