If I could cast Wasp in the Ant-Man film...
Yesterday, Marvel Studios announced that Michael Douglas has signed on to play the role of Hank Pym in Edgar Wright's upcoming Ant-Man film along side Paul Rudd's Scott Lang. For those not familiar with the Marvel Universe, Hank Pym is arguably one of the most important in it. He is a founding member of the Avengers in the comics and creator not only of the "Pym Particles" which allows one to alter their size, but also the creator of Ultron, an advanced artificial intelligence who achieves sentience and becomes a villain of the Avengers. (although it is unclear as to whether Pym will have created the Ultron in the Avengers sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron).
I think Michael Douglas has the gravitas to play Hank Pym and I think it's an interesting thing that he will play an Ant-Man from an earlier generation. This leaves an opportunity for him to take on one of his other guises, whether it be Yellowjacket, Giant-Man or Goliath, in the modern time while Scott Lang takes on the Ant-Man persona.
But, more than anything, I'm also hoping that this means, in some way, Janet van Dyne (aka Wasp) will be introduced. I am very happy to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming out. But, I do think it still lacks a level of diversity. Yes, Elizabeth Olsen will be joining the Avengers cast as the Scarlet Witch adding another woman (with super powers even) to the mix. But, the original woman Avenger was Wasp.
Again, for those not in the know, Wasp (or Janet van Dyne) was the wife of Hank Pym who, through the use of Pym Particles and some early bioengineering, is able to shrink and, at the same time, grow wings. She was initially given these powers to avenge the death of her father but, after having fallen in love with Pym, she remained his partner and eventually became a founding member of the Avengers. Their relationship then becomes rocky when Pym starts losing his grip on reality and they later divorce. But, she's always had some kind of presence within the Avengers, including her current role as the Avengers Unity Squad. Wasp was also a member of the Avengers in the animated show Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes.
Now, if they do introduce a Janet van Dyne into the Marvel Cinematic Universe who is the wife of Hank Pym and, let's say, around the same age, it would be interesting to see who they would cast. Michael Douglas is 69 years old. So, let's say they had an actress in her 60s to be age appropriate. That would leave us in the age range of actresses such as Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon and Helen Mirren. And, while any of these are fine actors who could stand toe to toe with Michael Douglas, I just can't see them in a Marvel movie (although, Helen Mirren was awesome in the comic book based Red films). However, there are actually two actresses that I think could reasonably play wife and partner to a Douglas aged Hank Pym and I could see in this role - Sigourney Weaver or Mary McDonnell.
Weaver in the role could give a certain level of comedy and play off the more self centered aspects of Janet van Dyne's persona whereas McDonnell could add a level of stateliness to the character.
Anyway, this is all conjecture for a role that hasn't been announced nor have they, at all, talked about. But, I think it's sometimes fun to speculate sometimes.
Who would you cast if Wasp were introduced in the Ant-Man film?
