Trip Report: Disneyland Resort - January 11, 2014

As you know, I started this blog as an extended trip report for the Disney Dreamers Everywhere tour.  So, I still want to offer trip reports, especially when I've experienced something new or to share photos I particularly like.  I'll probably play with formats over the next few reports just to see how I want to do them.

Anyway, here we go with my Disneyland Resort Trip Report for January 11, 2014 which was also my 45th birthday...

Denied Again!
One of the the things I wanted to do was to take a trip to Arendelle to visit Anna and Elsa.  One might remember on my last visit, my trip to Arendelle was diverted to Asgard due to the line being so crazy long.  I thought I could see them fairly easily as this is now supposed to be the dead season at Disneyland.  But, au contraire, mon frère...this was the wait when I got there:

...or, I should say that was the wait from the beginning of the actual queue as there was actually an extended queue.  So, technically, the wait was about 2 1/2 hours.  As I had several people with me, I was not going to have people wait with me nor was I going to disappear for 2 1/2 hours since people came to celebrate with me.  So, trip to Arendelle on this one.  This was as close as I got...

But, I'm telling you, the next trip I'm going to go at opening and just wait.  Come hell or high water, I WILL meet them again.  LOL!

Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree
So, with that, I decided to have everybody head over to the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree as I had heard that Disneyland was going to bring out characters "rarely seen" at Disneyland every weekend through May.

The Jamboree was set up similarly to the wildly popular Long Lost Friends Weeks that were part of the Limited Time Magic last year.  Different character groups met at various designed character meet-and-greet stops.

When I went, I saw Robin Hood and Friar Tuck...

Honest John and Gideon...

Suzy and Perla...

The Tremaines...

Clarabelle Cow...

...and Geppetto and Pinoccho!

Between sets, they also had a little cavalcade or parade that involved characters following a horse rider and flag bearer...

So, for character hunters, the assortment isn't probably as rare as one would want it.  But, I think it's wonderful that Disneyland is doing this.  It's something that's fun that they can do while waiting for the next event.  And, it's much better than a dance party.  And, who knows, this was just the first weekend.  The characters are supposed to vary, but it's unknown by anybody at what interval.  The only thing I wish they could do something about is the lighting in the area.  It seems no matter what time of day you go, it is always hard to take pictures of the characters with the meeting areas hit with various sunlight streaks.

Birthday Lunch
For lunch, we went to the Plaza Inn where my friend Steve provided a bunch of birthday surprises, including buttons, cast members singing "Happy Birthday" to me and providing a rose for my Mom! :)

Steve is an awesome guy who has many friends around the world...many of whom I also know!  If you're ever at Disneyland, be sure to drop by and say hello to Steve!

Mickey and the Magical Map
Now, I don't think I ever got around to reporting about "Mickey and the Magical Map" over at the Fantasyland Theatre.  In case you're not in the know, it's a show about Apprentice Mickey Mouse learning how to become a Magical Map Maker.  During his journey, he takes trips to various classic Disney animated films where we relive various musical memories.

It's a fun show and I think it's gotten better since it first opened in May.  The last time I watched it, they hadn't added the character Stitch into the show who was inexplicably missing from the original show and who I think really adds to that section.  I still think it would have been nice to see even more characters in this show, especially when compared to shows like "One Man's Dream" at Tokyo Disneyland and "The Golden Mickey's" at Hong Kong Disneyland.  But, for what it is, it's a nice show with lots of energy and full of love from the performers who perform the show every day!

Over at Disney California Adventure...
Since I was with people who hadn't been to the park in awhile, I took the group over to Cars Land...

...and Paradise Pier...

Fireworks over Buena Vista Street
In the evening, while waiting for our Fastpass time to start at the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, we ended up watching the Disneyland fireworks, but from  Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure.  Now, while the fireworks are choreographed to a soundtrack which can only be heard at Disneyland, it's still a beautiful sight to see from Buena Vista Street.

Mad T Party
We ended our day at the Mad T Party in Hollywood Land.  By the time we got there, the Mad T Party Band had ended their sets, but the White Rabbit was still DJ'ing up a storm...

And, with that, my birthday trip was over.  And, to end this, I thought I'd share this photo of the spotlights from Mad T Party seen from near the Carthay Circle Theater...

  1. Hi!
I was just wondering, what are the chances of meeting the Marvel Superheroes, as well as Lady Tremaine and Stepsisters, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle and Clara Cluck? Is it also true that Pocahontas frequents Frontierland and Royal Hall?
Where did Clarabelle's dress here originate from?

    1. Hi! Thanks for your comment! When you ask What are the chances of meeting Marvel Superheroes and the rest, are you asking at the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree or at Disneyland in general? If at Big Thunder Ranch, the Marvel Superheroes are not meeting there right now (at least, not to my knowledge). The characters there are supposed to vary every so often. From this trip report, you can see who was out.

Unfortunately, on a daily basis, the Tremaines, Horace, Clarabelle and Clara are not out. But, there's a good chance you can meet them at the Jamboree during the weekend.

As for the Marvel Superheroes, currently, it's only Thor meeting at the Treasures of Asgard exhibit at Innoventions. He will be there indefinitely. In fact, Disneyland recently announced that, in April, Captain America will also be meeting at Innoventions as well and that Thor will continue to be meeting at that time. So, if you go in April, you'd be able to meet both Thor AND Captain America.

As for Pocahontas, I have not seen her at the Royal Hall. If she has appeared there, she is there very rarely. She is, however, sometimes spotted along the Big Thunder Trail in Frontierland. There's no set schedule for her and she's not out every day, but, if you ask a cast member that day, they can find out if she'll be out that day.

Finally, as for Clarabelle's dress, I'm not sure where it originates from. It's the dress she's always worn at Disneyland. I've heard that it's different than the one she wears at other parks, but I'm not sure if it comes from anywhere in particular. Sorry about that.

Anyway, hope that helps! Keep the great questions coming!

  2. Regarding Clarabelle's dress, it actually comes from Celebrate! A Street Party. It seems that at DL, they have her wear it on occassion as it seems to allow more freedom of movement than her typical "Band Concert" outfit.

However, like Horace, Clarabelle still wears her "Band Concert" outfit (which remains her common attire at the Disney parks) at DL regularly.

    1. The only thing is that I don't think I've ever met Clarabelle in any other outfit than this one. She doesn't regularly meet at Disneyland. While she's not super rare, she's fairly uncommon. Unless I've missed her somewhere regularly...

    2. I did not say she was regular for meet-and-greets. All I said was that the Band Concert outfit was the outfit she "regularly wears" at the parks.

Also, she has done DL meet-and-greets in the Band Concert outfit, such as during previous Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree events and the 2013 Mickey's Halloween Parties during the Toontown pre-party.

  3. You're right, Philip! So sorry about that. She has INDEED worn her band concert outfit before!
