October 18, 2012 - Starlit Hui

The pièce de résistance of entertainment at Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa is the Starlit Hui which is held on the Halawai Lawn.  It is an absolutely magnificent show that incorporates both traditional and modern Hawaiian entertainment, including a performance by our favorite Disney characters at the end.

When you arrive at the Halawai lawn, you are given a grass mat to sit on during the show.  While cast members taught audience members how to do some local arts and crafts, I stayed where I was as we had gotten there early enough to get a space front row center.  And, I was not going to surrender that.  LOL!

It starts with Uncle welcoming guests to the Starlit Lui.  Uncle is the master of ceremonies throughout the show.

Uncle invites people to come up and learn the hula from some of the dancers.  We were also allowed to take pictures with them.

Soon, some Hawaiian musicians, and I wish I could remember their names, came out and played some music...

...and, later, they were accompanied by dancers doing traditional hula...

Uncle then came back out to talk story a Hawaiian legend that soon transitioned into a traditional hula...

Next, another singer came out accompanied by dancers with these beautiful birds on sticks...

Uncle then introduced Heart and Soul, a pair of dueling ukulele performers, who offered a more modern spin on a more traditional Hawaiian instrument.  They were so high energy and a delight to watch!  After that, I almost wanted to learn how to play the ukulele!

Then, the dancers come out for one final dance...

And, finally, at the very end, the characters come out for some high energy, less traditional dancing...

The characters came out at the end, but, given that I had woke up at the crack of dawn and the fact that I had met them all in the Waikohole Valley and the long lines filled by children, I opted not to do meet-and-greets that night.

Oh, and I should make it clear that this is a show and not a luau.  It's a question I've been asked a few times before.  A luau is a traditional Hawaiian feast that usually features entertainment such as the hula and other traditional Polynesian performances.  This show does not include any food.  But, if you're wanting to get a wonderful taste of Hawaiian entertainment both old and new, the Starlit Hui is a show not to be missed!  It was definitely one of the best things I saw at the Aulani and, to tell you the truth, one of the best shows Disney entertainment has put together.
