October 18, 2012 - The 'Ōlelo Room

One of my favorite places at Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa was The 'Ōlelo Room, a lounge/restaurant found on the first floor...

The word "'Ōlelo" has many meanings.  Some say it means "language" and some say it means "voice."  There is no real word in English that can describe it without reducing it to a singular thing.  It is the telling of things.  And, as such, The 'Ōlelo Room is a wonderful interactive experience that teaches you words in 'Ōlelo Hawai'i (again, loosely...the Hawaiian language).  Everything in the lounge has 'Ōlelo including the doors, tables and bar.  But, the coolest things are the shadow boxes that line the lounge...

These ones below, though, are ones that were specifically Disney and I thought it was a nice subtle touch.  Again, it's this concept of the Aulani being about the big "H" and the small "d," meaning that, yes, it is a Disney resort, but, not at the expense of Hawaiian culture.  Hawaii is the star at the Aulani.  That said, it is fun to see the Disney touches which are almost like Hidden Mickeys.

The first one is "Kāne" which is the loose translation for "Man."  Cast members have told me that the carving of them man that accompanies the word is meant to be Walt Disney himself...

The word for "Kākela," or loosely translate to "Castle," looks like Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland...

The word "Kika," the word for "Tiger," looks like Tigger...

The word "'Iole," the word for "Mouse," is Mickey Mouse...

...and, finally, the word "Hale," loosely translated into "House," is Carl's and Ellie's house from Disney/Pixar's UP!

Such cute touches all throughout The 'Ōlelo Room.  I could spend hours in there just looking at everything and, at the same time, feeling so much the wiser.
