June 28, 2013 - It's A Brazzle, Dazzle Day...Visiting Disney Point

This next trip doesn't really involve a Disney Park or characters, but I do count it as a Disney trip.  It was a day trip I took with my nephews a couple days ago to see where they filmed the exterior lighthouse scenes from Disney's Pete's Dragon on the Point Buchon Trail in Los Osos, California.  While within the area of Montaña de Oro State Park, the land is actually run and maintained by Pacific Gas & Electric (PGE).  The area where they filmed it is called, appropriately, Disney Point.  What's weird is that many sources, including the Disney Archives, say that Disney Point is north of Morro Bay when, in fact, it is SOUTH of Morro Bay.

As I've mentioned before in another blog entry, The Rescuers and Pete's Dragon are very special Disney films to me because, I think, they are the Disney films I remember watching in first release.  Again, I had seen Disney films before that time, but these are the ones I remember distinctly and loving them so much.  I know many in my generation have a similar connection.

Anyway, I had heard that this was the place where they filmed the exterior lighthouse scenes such as the "Brazzle Dazzle Day" musical sequence...

...so, I had to go see it and thought it would be a fun activity for my nephews.

While we could have taken a shortcut, we decided to go around the coast and stop at some of the places on the maps they gave us.  We started off at the check-in station where the boys enjoyed seeing various bones and other items from the Point Buchon Trail on display...

We then made our way down the trail...

...with our first stop being Coon Creek Beach where the boys picked up lots of cool rocks.

Also nearby was a sinkhole that was created through erosion in the 1990s...

We continued to follow the trail, seeing some more beautiful scenery...

...and soon, a few miles later, we were at Disney Point!

On this point is where the lighthouse once stood.  Sadly, the lighthouse was only a set piece for the film to help transform the Central Coast of California into the coast of Maine...

This is the view from the other side...compare with this photo I found from the San Luis Obispo Tribune (I couldn't quite get the same angle)

We then went to sit on the bench at Disney Point which was the farthest we could go on the point...

This is where the lighthouse would have stood!

The kids and I had a Brazzle Dazzle Day!

  1. I'm 21, but "Pete's Dragon" is still my favorite childhood movie! Although I've never been to California (I'm from Wisconsin), I still wish they didn't tear down that lighthouse. It could've been an epic tourist attraction for the park. Also, if I had the money, I'd want to rebuild the lighthouse as my own home! The movie made me fall in love with dragons and lighthouses!
